This beautiful church with its recently renovated tower and prominent spire is located in the picturesque hamlet of Kirby Grindalythe which nestles quietly in the lovely rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds. Dating from the 12th century, the church has earlier origins revealed by fragments of 9th - 11th century crosses and an early Romanesque tomb chest. The chancel was reconstructed and a new nave built in 1872-5 by G.E.Street for Sir Tatton Sykes II who provided it with stained glass by Clayton & Bell and H.V.Milner, pretty wrought iron and wooden screens and a carved alabaster and marble reredos. The whole of the west wall of the nave is covered with a truly wonderful mosaic by the Venice and Murano Glass Company. Major renovations have recently been completed restoring the church to an excellent state of repair. 

The church stands in a large churchyard in an elevated position at the western end of the village street. Car parking immediately adjacent to the church is difficult due to the narrow nature of the lane, which runs parallel with a small stream ( called the Gypsey Race ! ). However, there are plenty of spaces to park within the village, either near the telephone box or down the access road into the hamlet.

Whilst there are no toilets in the church itself, facilities for Ladies and Gentleman are available in the Village Hall which is always open and which is located a few yards south of the Lychgate across the small bridge over the Gypsey Race.

There are several delightful circular walks in and around the village, of varying lengths, some of which offer stunning views of the village and church and of the surrounding countryside. For those less able, there are car parking places on the south easterly exit road from the village (towards Sledmere ) at Crook Plantation, from which there is a level public bridleway with excellent views. For those wanting a more detailed layout of the surrounding area, including footpaths and byways etc., the applicable Ordnance Survey Map is Explorer 300 - '' Howardian Hills & Malton - Yorkshire Wolds North''.

Regular services are still held in the church, as well as in the other four chuches of the Benefice of the Wolds Valley, at which you can always be assured of a warm welcome.
